After the selection in Rotterdam and the win as Best Canadian Feature at the Montreal International Documentary Festival, “Hoax_Canular” of Dominic Gagnon has its Italian premiere at Lago Film Fest. The movie applies the Gagnon’s mode of operation – assembling inconvenient amateur videos found on the web before the inevitable removal, consigning them to eternity – to the Mayan pre-apocalyptic frenzy of December 21, 2012: in a countdown to the prophetic date, an army of teenagers exorcises anxiety or organizes the survival, conquering fear by manufacturing scares; “Hoax_Canular” results in a profound reflection on how young people are appropriating the angst being stoked by the media. Hilarious, tender, disturbing: a precious play in its ambiguity, in balance between chronicle, parody and self-parody.
